Visual Abstracts

Visual abstracts are quick, shareable summaries of the key findings of JAFES articles, designed to help busy readers find the research most relevant to them. Explore them here, then read the full articles.

A visual abstract is a visual summary of a manuscript’s key findings, presented in a clear, concise format. It works like a movie trailer for a scientific article: a quick preview that helps busy readers decide which full papers are most relevant to them. Visual abstracts are not meant to replace reading the full article.

JAFES began publishing visual abstracts to improve the visibility and reach of the research we publish. Clinicians have little time to read full articles, and a short, shareable graphic makes it easier for them to find and engage with our content on social media. Each visual abstract is prepared by the JAFES creative team using online design tools, following training in visual abstract development. For selected articles, we produce two versions: one for health professionals and one for the general public.

Early results have been encouraging. After visual abstracts were introduced, average daily views of the journal website (based on OJS data) rose by 172% compared with the period before. By improving dissemination, encouraging engagement, and raising awareness of the journal, visual abstracts help JAFES act as the endocrine window between the ASEAN region and the world. They also have the potential to influence not only clinical practice but also patient behavior.
